Francesco Cornaro (doge)

Francesco Cornaro (also known as Francesco Corner) was the Doge of Venice from 1722 to 1734. Born in Venice on March 4, 1647, he hailed from the prominent Cornaro family, who had already produced several Doges in Venetian history.

Cornaro's early career involved various roles in Venetian government and administration. He served as a diplomat, procurator of St. Mark's, and held other important positions before his election as Doge on June 11, 1722, at the age of 75.

His reign as Doge was largely uneventful, marked by a period of relative peace and stability for the Republic of Venice. Venice, however, was experiencing a gradual decline in its economic and political power during this era, and Cornaro's dogeship reflected this reality. He focused primarily on maintaining the status quo and presiding over the ceremonial duties associated with the office.

Francesco Cornaro died on August 5, 1734, in Venice, bringing his twelve-year rule to an end. He was succeeded by Carlo Ruzzini. His legacy is primarily tied to his family's prominent role in Venetian history and his stewardship during a period of transition for the Republic.
