VF-8 (1941–1942)

VF-8 was a fighter squadron of the United States Navy that existed during a brief period at the beginning of World War II. It was established and disestablished within approximately a year. The squadron was assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Hornet (CV-8). VF-8 saw combat during the Doolittle Raid in April 1942, providing fighter cover for the task force. The squadron subsequently participated in the Battle of Midway in June 1942. VF-8 was heavily engaged during the battle, suffering significant losses. Due to these losses and other factors, VF-8 was disestablished shortly after the Battle of Midway. The squadron's designation was later reassigned to a different fighter squadron.
