64th Army (Soviet Union)

The 64th Army was a field army of the Soviet Red Army during World War II. It was formed in July 1942 as part of the Stalingrad Front, primarily from reserves of the Southwestern Front, to defend the approaches to Stalingrad during the Battle of Stalingrad. Its initial composition included several rifle divisions, tank corps, and artillery units.

The 64th Army played a crucial role in the defensive battles south of Stalingrad. Under the command of General Mikhail Shumilov for the majority of its existence, it endured heavy fighting against the German 6th Army and 4th Panzer Army. Its tenacious defense significantly contributed to slowing the German advance and wearing down their forces. The army fought stubbornly in the Don Bend and subsequently in the suburbs and factories of southern Stalingrad, preventing the Germans from quickly capturing the city.

Following the successful Soviet counter-offensive (Operation Uranus) in November 1942, which encircled the German 6th Army, the 64th Army participated in the subsequent reduction of the encircled forces. It helped to close the inner ring around the German pocket and gradually squeeze the trapped enemy.

After the surrender of the German 6th Army in February 1943, the 64th Army was reorganized and renamed the 7th Guards Army in April 1943, reflecting its distinguished performance during the Battle of Stalingrad. The 7th Guards Army went on to participate in further operations on the Eastern Front.
