Eichsfeld (district)
The Eichsfeld is a district (Kreis) in Thuringia, Germany. It is located in the northwest of the state and borders Lower Saxony and Hesse. The district seat is Heilbad Heiligenstadt.
Geography
The Eichsfeld district lies in the historical region of the same name, the Eichsfeld, which historically was predominantly Catholic and part of the Archbishopric of Mainz. The landscape is characterized by rolling hills and fertile farmland. The district includes parts of the Ohmgebirge, a low mountain range.
History
The Eichsfeld region has a rich history, dating back to the Middle Ages. Throughout much of its history, it was a territory belonging to the Archbishopric of Mainz, a feature that strongly influenced its religious and cultural identity. After the secularization of church lands in the early 19th century, the Eichsfeld was divided between Prussia and other states. After World War II, the Eichsfeld became part of East Germany. After German reunification in 1990, the district was re-established within the state of Thuringia.
