St. Sarkis Church (Yerevan, Armenia)
St. Sarkis Church is the seat of the Araratian Pontifical Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church. Located in Yerevan, Armenia, on the left bank of the Hrazdan River, it is one of the most prominent and recognizable churches in the city.
The original church on this site dates back to the early Middle Ages, although it was destroyed during a devastating earthquake in 1679. The current building was constructed between 1835 and 1842, commissioned by Catholicos Nerses V. It reflects a blend of architectural styles, including Armenian architectural traditions and influences from European church design that were popular at the time.
Significant renovations and expansions were undertaken in the latter half of the 20th century. Between 1972 and 1976, the interior was remodeled, and a gallery for the choir was added. More substantial reconstruction occurred between 1998 and 2000 under the patronage of Sarkis Gabrellian and his sons, in memory of his parents. Architect Artak Ghulyan oversaw this extensive project. New murals depicting scenes from the Bible and Armenian church history were created by the artist Henrik Mamyan. The exterior was also renovated, including the addition of a new bell tower.
St. Sarkis Church is dedicated to Saint Sarkis the Warrior, a popular and revered saint in the Armenian Apostolic Church known for his courage and faith. The church serves as a vital center for religious life and pilgrimage within Yerevan.
