Alex Smith (footballer, born 1940)

Alexander "Alex" Smith (born 10 March 1940) is a Scottish former professional footballer who played primarily as an inside forward.

Smith began his career with East Fife, making his debut in 1958. He moved to Rangers in 1961 for a reported fee of £8,000. During his time at Rangers, he won three Scottish League titles (1962-63, 1963-64, 1965-66), three Scottish Cups (1962, 1963, 1964), and four Scottish League Cups (1961, 1962, 1964, 1965). He also played in the 1961 European Cup Winners' Cup Final, which Rangers lost to Fiorentina.

In 1966, Smith transferred to Everton for a fee of £55,000. He was a key member of the Everton team that won the Football League First Division title in 1969-70. He also played in the 1968 FA Cup Final, which Everton lost to West Bromwich Albion.

Smith later played for Leicester City from 1971 to 1973, and then had a short spell with Stockport County before retiring from professional football.

After his playing career, Smith moved into coaching, managing several clubs in the lower leagues of English football.
