Pidhaitsi

Pidhaitsi (Ukrainian: Підгайці, Polish: Podhajce, Yiddish: פּאָדאַיץ‎) is a town located in the Ternopil Oblast of western Ukraine. It serves as the administrative center of the Pidhaitsi urban hromada, one of the hromadas of Ukraine.

History:

Pidhaitsi has a rich and complex history, reflecting its location in a region that has been controlled by various powers over the centuries. The first written mention of the town dates back to 1397. It received Magdeburg rights in 1463, fostering its development as a trade and craft center. Throughout the 15th to 18th centuries, Pidhaitsi was frequently targeted by Tatar and Turkish raids. The Battles of Podhajce (1667 and 1698) were significant military engagements fought nearby.

The town was part of the Kingdom of Poland until the First Partition of Poland in 1772, when it became part of the Habsburg Empire (later Austria-Hungary). After World War I, it became part of Poland again. Following the Soviet invasion of Poland in 1939, Pidhaitsi was annexed by the Soviet Union and incorporated into the Ukrainian SSR. During World War II, it was occupied by Nazi Germany. After the war, it remained part of the Soviet Union until Ukraine gained independence in 1991.
