Calshot

Calshot is a coastal village in Hampshire, England, situated at the end of a shingle spit extending into Southampton Water. Historically significant due to its strategic location, Calshot has played a role in maritime defence and aviation.

History:

Calshot's history dates back to the early 16th century when Calshot Castle was constructed by Henry VIII as part of his Device Forts programme to protect England from invasion. The castle remains a prominent feature of the area, offering views across the Solent. For centuries, the area served as a military and naval outpost.

Aviation:

In the early 20th century, Calshot became a major seaplane base, known as RAF Calshot. It served as a flying boat base for both military and civilian operations. During the interwar years, it was a key hub for Imperial Airways, connecting Britain to its empire via long-distance seaplane routes. The Schneider Trophy seaplane races were frequently held in the waters off Calshot. RAF Calshot played a vital role during World War II, providing support for maritime patrols and anti-submarine warfare. The base closed in 1961.

Calshot Activities Centre, located within the former RAF base, offers a range of outdoor pursuits including sailing, windsurfing, climbing, and skiing.
