John Thomas (bishop of Rochester)

John Thomas (1712 – 22 August 1793) was an English churchman and Bishop of Rochester.

Thomas was born in Carlisle, Cumberland, and educated at Queen's College, Oxford, where he matriculated in 1728 and graduated B.A. 1733, M.A. 1736, and D.D. 1758. He served as chaplain to King George II.

His ecclesiastical career included the following positions:

  • Rector of Blechingley, Surrey (1748)
  • Prebendary of Westminster (1754)
  • Rector of St Vedast Foster Lane, London (1762)
  • Dean of Westminster (1768)
  • Bishop of Rochester (1774)

As Dean of Westminster, he oversaw the laying of the foundation stone for the new buildings of Westminster School in 1768. As Bishop of Rochester, he also held the position of Dean of Rochester, as was customary. He died at Bromley, Kent, and was buried in Bromley Parish Church. He is remembered as a respected figure in the Church of England during his time.
