Edward East (clockmaker)

Edward East (c. 1602 – 1693) was an English clockmaker and a founding member of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers in 1631, serving as its first Master. He is considered one of the most important figures in the early development of English clockmaking.

East's early life is relatively undocumented, but he is believed to have been of Dutch origin, possibly arriving in England as part of the influx of skilled artisans from the continent. He established his workshop in London and quickly gained a reputation for producing high-quality clocks and watches.

He was known for his innovative designs and the precision of his workmanship. His clocks often featured elaborate cases and intricate mechanisms, showcasing the burgeoning skills of English artisans. He specialized in both longcase clocks (grandfather clocks) and table clocks. Some of his pieces were made for royalty and the aristocracy.

East's role as the first Master of the Clockmakers' Company was crucial in establishing standards for the craft and regulating its practice. The Company played a significant role in training apprentices, setting prices, and ensuring the quality of timekeeping instruments produced in England. East's leadership helped to establish London as a center for clockmaking excellence.
