Earth 2 (TV series)
Earth 2 was an American science fiction television series that aired on NBC from November 6, 1994, to June 4, 1995. It ran for one season, consisting of 22 episodes. The series was created by Michael Duggan, Carol Flint, Mark Levin, and Billy Ray.
The show is set in the year 2257, where Earth has become polluted and largely uninhabitable due to environmental damage. A group of pioneers, led by Devon Adair, embarks on a perilous mission to colonize a habitable planet called G889. Their hope is to find a new home for their children, many of whom suffer from a fatal illness known as "the syndrome" caused by Earth's toxicity.
The journey to G889 is fraught with challenges, including a crash landing that separates the colonists from their supplies. They must contend with the planet's unfamiliar and often hostile environment, as well as the emergence of new life forms, some of which are friendly and others threatening.
Key elements of the show include:
- The Syndrome: A debilitating illness affecting many children on Earth, making them dependent on life support. Colonizing G889 is seen as the only hope for a cure.
- G889: The habitable planet the colonists are trying to reach. It presents both opportunities and dangers.
- Terrians: The native inhabitants of G889, some of whom are peaceful and others pose a threat.
- Artificial Intelligence: The series features advanced technology, including artificial intelligence, which plays a crucial role in the colonists' survival.
- Family and Community: The themes of family and community are central to the narrative, as the colonists struggle to build a new life together in the face of adversity.
The show was cancelled after one season due to low ratings, despite having a dedicated fanbase and generating some critical acclaim for its ambitious concept and exploration of environmental themes.
