James H. Davis (congressman)

James H. Davis (1853 – January 16, 1940) was a U.S. Representative from Texas. Born in Cherokee County, Alabama, Davis moved to Texas in 1866. He attended the common schools and read law, being admitted to the bar in 1881 and commencing practice in Sulphur Springs, Texas.

Davis served as county attorney of Hopkins County, Texas, from 1882 to 1886. He was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-eighth and Fifty-ninth Congresses (March 4, 1903 – March 3, 1907). He was not a candidate for renomination in 1906.

After his service in Congress, Davis resumed the practice of law in Sulphur Springs, Texas. He also engaged in banking. He died in Sulphur Springs on January 16, 1940, and was interred in City Cemetery.
