John Boyle (congressman)

John Boyle (1774 – January 28, 1835) was a U.S. Representative and United States Circuit Judge from Kentucky.

Born near Market Hill, County Armagh, Ireland, Boyle immigrated to the United States with his parents, who settled in Mercer County, Kentucky. He pursued classical studies and read law. He was admitted to the bar in 1797 and commenced practice in Lancaster, Kentucky.

Boyle served as a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives from 1800 to 1802. He was elected as a Democratic-Republican to the Tenth and Eleventh Congresses (March 4, 1807 – March 3, 1811). He served as judge of the Kentucky Court of Appeals from 1812 to 1826, acting as chief justice from 1812 to 1820.

On December 18, 1826, Boyle was nominated by President John Quincy Adams as a United States Circuit Judge for the Sixth Circuit. He was confirmed by the Senate on December 20, 1826, and received his commission on December 23, 1826. He served in that capacity until his death in Danville, Kentucky, on January 28, 1835. He was interred in the Bellevue Cemetery.
