Charles R. Cross (physicist)
Charles R. Cross (born November 18, 1937, died December 22, 2019) was an American physicist known for his contributions to the field of electroluminescence, particularly in the development of inorganic light-emitting diodes (LEDs).
Cross received his Ph.D. in physics from Washington State University in 1967. His career was primarily spent in research and development roles within private industry, notably at Hewlett-Packard and later at Planar Systems, Inc. His work focused on improving the efficiency, brightness, and color control of electroluminescent displays.
Cross held several patents related to thin-film electroluminescent (TFEL) display technology and made significant advancements in the understanding of the physical processes underlying light emission in these devices. His research helped to make TFEL displays a viable technology for a range of applications, including medical instrumentation, industrial controls, and military displays. His contributions were instrumental in the commercialization of full-color TFEL displays.
