KXAS-TV
KXAS-TV is a television station licensed to Fort Worth, Texas, United States, serving the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. It is an owned-and-operated station of NBCUniversal's NBC Owned Television Stations subsidiary. KXAS-TV's studios are located in east Fort Worth, and its transmitter is located in Cedar Hill.
The station's history dates back to September 29, 1948, when it signed on the air as WBAP-TV, owned by the Carter family's Fort Worth Star-Telegram newspaper along with WBAP radio (820 AM). It was the first television station in the state of Texas. Originally affiliated with NBC, ABC, CBS, and the DuMont Television Network, WBAP-TV became exclusively an NBC affiliate in 1949.
In 1973, the Carter family sold WBAP-TV to LIN Broadcasting. LIN changed the station's call letters to KXAS-TV on May 29, 1974, reflecting the station's service area and NBC affiliation (XAS loosely standing for "Texas").
In 2000, LIN Television sold KXAS-TV to NBC as part of a group deal that included sister stations KNSD in San Diego and WVTM-TV in Birmingham. This acquisition made KXAS-TV an NBC owned-and-operated station.
KXAS-TV broadcasts local news, weather forecasts, and community events coverage, along with NBC network programming. The station's news programming is branded as "NBC 5 News."
