Henry Wood (cricketer, born 1853)

Henry Wood (born 16 October 1853 in Brighton, Sussex; died 30 April 1919 in Hove, Sussex) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Sussex between 1874 and 1891. A right-handed batsman and occasional right-arm medium pace bowler, Wood played in 299 first-class matches, scoring 9,948 runs at an average of 21.93, with a highest score of 170. He took 73 wickets at an average of 32.43, with a best of 5 for 20. He also held 235 catches in his career. Known for his strong defensive technique and resilience, he was a reliable member of the Sussex batting lineup for many years.
