William Miller (North Carolina politician)
William Miller (1783 – 1825) was an American lawyer and politician from North Carolina. He served as the 17th Governor of North Carolina from 1814 to 1817.
Born in Warren County, North Carolina, Miller studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1805. He began his political career as a member of the North Carolina House of Commons from 1807 to 1811. Subsequently, he served as the Attorney General of North Carolina from 1810 to 1811.
In 1814, Miller was elected Governor of North Carolina, serving three one-year terms. During his tenure, he focused on improving the state's infrastructure and promoting education. He advocated for the construction of roads and canals to facilitate trade and transportation within the state. He also championed the establishment of public schools and the advancement of higher education.
Following his governorship, Miller was elected as a U.S. Representative from North Carolina, serving from 1817 to 1821. In Congress, he generally aligned with the Democratic-Republican party.
Miller died in 1825 at the age of 42.
