Meenad

Meenad (also spelled Menad) refers to a traditional boat used in the Maldives, particularly for fishing and inter-atoll transport. It is a variation of the dhoni, a general term for Maldivian boats, but typically larger and more robust, built for longer voyages and carrying heavier loads. Meenads are generally constructed of wood, traditionally coconut palm or imported timber, and rely on sails and/or engines for propulsion. They are essential to the Maldivian economy and culture, facilitating trade, fishing, and transportation between the geographically dispersed islands. Key features often include a raised deck at the stern for steering and navigation and a covered area for cargo or passengers.
