ABCC13

ABCC13 is a gene that belongs to the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter superfamily. These proteins transport various molecules across extra- and intra-cellular membranes. ABC transporters utilize the energy of ATP hydrolysis to perform this function.

ABCC13 specifically belongs to the ABCC subfamily, also known as the multidrug resistance-associated protein (MRP) subfamily. However, unlike some other members of the ABCC subfamily like ABCC1, ABCC13's precise substrate specificity and physiological role remain less well-characterized. Research suggests it may be involved in the transport of certain lipids or other as-yet-unidentified compounds.

Variations in the ABCC13 gene have been investigated in relation to various diseases and conditions. Studies have explored potential associations with susceptibility to certain neurological disorders and metabolic diseases. However, the exact mechanisms and functional consequences of these variations are still under investigation.

Further research is needed to fully elucidate the physiological functions of ABCC13 and its contribution to health and disease.
