Double Dare (1976 game show)

Double Dare was a short-lived game show that aired on CBS from December 20, 1976, to March 25, 1977. Hosted by Alex Trebek, who would later become famous as the host of Jeopardy!, the show featured two teams of two contestants answering trivia questions.

The game was structured around a format of double dares, allowing teams to challenge their opponents with harder questions or physical stunts. If a team answered a question correctly, they earned points. If they missed the question or failed the stunt, the opposing team would earn the points.

A defining element of Double Dare (1976) was its use of physical stunts, which were generally comedic and messy. These stunts involved things like identifying objects while blindfolded or completing tasks within a time limit. The winning team, determined by the highest score, would advance to a bonus round for a chance to win a larger prize.

While Double Dare (1976) was relatively short-lived, its format of trivia questions combined with physical challenges laid the groundwork for future game shows, most notably the Nickelodeon version of Double Dare, which premiered in 1986 and achieved significantly greater popularity and longevity. The original Double Dare is often overshadowed by its Nickelodeon counterpart.
