Nahiyah

A nahiyah (Arabic: ناحية, plural nawāḥī) is an administrative division, most commonly translated as a subdistrict, district, or ward. It represents a level of administrative subdivision below a district (Arabic: qadaa) and above a village or town. The precise characteristics and responsibilities of a nahiyah vary from country to country and historical period to historical period. Generally, it represents a group of villages and smaller towns governed by a central authority, often a mudir (director).

The term is used in several Arab countries, including:

  • Iraq: The nahiyah is an administrative division below the qadaa (district) level.
  • Syria: Similarly, a nahiyah exists below the mintaqah (district).
  • Lebanon: The nahiyah serves as a subdivision of a district (qadaa).
  • Jordan: Nawahi exist but are not as prominent as other administrative divisions.

Historically, the term has also been used in other regions influenced by Ottoman administrative practices. The precise powers and responsibilities assigned to nawāḥī are often subject to change with evolving governmental structures. Therefore, a clear understanding of the specific context is crucial when discussing the administrative role of a nahiyah.
