Wilson (1933-2016) was a prominent American folklorist, best known for his work on Mormon folklore, family folklore, and the application of psychological perspectives to the study of folklore. He served as a professor of English at Brigham Young University for over 30 years, shaping the field of folklore studies in Utah and beyond.

Wilson received his Ph.D. in Folklore from Indiana University. His research explored the functions of folklore within communities, particularly how it creates and reinforces identity, values, and social cohesion. He emphasized the importance of understanding folklore not just as historical artifact but as a dynamic and living force in contemporary society.

A significant portion of Wilson's work focused on Mormon folklore, examining the stories, beliefs, and traditions that have developed within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He argued that studying Mormon folklore offered valuable insights into the culture and worldview of this unique religious group.

Wilson's publications include "Folklore and Nationalism," "The Marrow of Human Experience: Essays on Folklore," and numerous articles in leading folklore journals. He was a Fellow of the American Folklore Society and served as its president. His work has been influential in promoting a more nuanced and theoretically informed approach to the study of folklore.
