Newport West and Islwyn (UK Parliament constituency)
Newport West and Islwyn is a proposed new constituency of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It is scheduled to be first contested at the next general election, expected to be held no later than January 2025.
The constituency is formed from parts of the existing constituencies of Newport West and Islwyn, both located in Wales. The Boundary Commission for Wales proposed these changes as part of its 2023 review of parliamentary constituencies. The aim of the review was to reduce the number of Welsh constituencies from 40 to 32 and to equalize the electorate size of each constituency.
The constituency encompasses the western parts of the city of Newport, including wards such as Allt-yr-yn, Gaer, and Tredegar Park. It also includes a significant portion of the current Islwyn constituency, particularly the western and southern areas. This includes towns and villages such as Crumlin, Abercarn, Newbridge and parts of Blackwood.
The creation of Newport West and Islwyn reflects the changing demographics and population distribution within South Wales. It seeks to create a constituency that adheres more closely to the target electorate size, while also respecting local government boundaries and geographic communities. The political makeup of the new constituency is yet to be determined, and will depend on the voting patterns of the newly combined electorate.
