Gorgo (film)
Gorgo is a 1961 science fiction monster film directed by Eugène Lourié. The film stars Bill Travers, William Sylvester, and Vincent Winter. Produced by King Brothers Productions and distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Gorgo is notable for its depiction of a giant sea monster and its baby, as well as its setting in the British Isles rather than the more typical American or Japanese locations for such films.
The plot revolves around the discovery of a large sea creature off the coast of Ireland by treasure hunters. The creature, named Gorgo, is captured and transported to London to be exhibited. However, it is soon revealed that Gorgo is merely an infant, and its much larger and more powerful mother arrives to rescue it, causing widespread destruction in London.
Gorgo features special effects by Tom Howard. The film's monster design is distinctive, setting it apart from other giant monster movies of the era. It has garnered a cult following over the years and is recognized for its unique take on the giant monster genre. While not a critical success upon its initial release, Gorgo has become a recognized and fondly remembered film within the kaiju movie landscape.
