Hu Wei (general)

Hu Wei (fl. late 14th century) was a military general who served under the Hongwu Emperor, the founder of the Ming dynasty. Details of his early life and origins are scarce. He is best known for his involvement in the Lan Yu Affair, a major purge of high-ranking military officials in 1393.

Hu Wei held a significant military position, often described as a senior commander or general (大將軍). He was implicated in the alleged rebellion planned by Lan Yu, a highly decorated general who had led Ming forces to a decisive victory against the Northern Yuan. Historical sources depict Hu Wei as a key figure in supporting and furthering Lan Yu's supposed ambitions to usurp the throne.

The details surrounding the Lan Yu Affair remain a subject of historical debate. Some scholars believe the purge was a genuine attempt to eliminate a treasonous plot, while others argue that it was orchestrated by the Hongwu Emperor to consolidate his power and remove potential threats to his designated heir, his grandson Zhu Yunwen. Regardless, Hu Wei's association with Lan Yu led to his execution, along with thousands of others, including members of their families.

The Lan Yu Affair had a profound impact on the Ming military. The purge significantly reduced the power and influence of the military aristocracy, strengthening the emperor's control over the armed forces and centralizing power within the imperial court. Hu Wei, though not as famous as Lan Yu, remains a figure associated with this pivotal event in Ming dynasty history.
