Kiefhoek

Kiefhoek is a residential neighborhood located in Rotterdam, Netherlands. It is situated in the borough of Feijenoord, on the south bank of the Nieuwe Maas river.

Historically, Kiefhoek is significant for its social housing project designed by the renowned Dutch architect J.J.P. Oud. Built between 1925 and 1930, the Kiefhoek estate was conceived as a model working-class neighborhood, embodying principles of functionalism and efficiency in housing design. Oud aimed to provide affordable and well-designed homes for workers, promoting a sense of community and improving living conditions.

The Kiefhoek design features rows of identical, two-story houses arranged around communal green spaces. The uniformity and rational layout were characteristic of the Nieuwe Bouwen (New Building) architectural movement, of which Oud was a key figure. Despite initial criticism regarding its perceived monotony, Kiefhoek is now recognized as an important example of early modernist social housing and a significant contribution to Dutch architectural heritage.

Over time, the Kiefhoek neighborhood has undergone renovations and modifications to meet contemporary living standards. While maintaining its historical character, the area continues to serve as a residential area, housing a diverse community. It is considered a valuable example of architectural and social history within Rotterdam.
