L'Atlantide (1992 film)
L'Atlantide is a 1992 French-Italian adventure film directed by Bob Swaim. It is based on the 1919 novel L'Atlantide (Atlantis) by Pierre Benoit. The film stars Tchéky Karyo, Jean Rochefort, Anna Kanakis, and Fernando Rey.
The story follows two French officers, Capitaine Morhange (Karyo) and Lieutenant Saint-Avit (Christopher Buchholz), who become lost in the Sahara desert and stumble upon the lost kingdom of Atlantis, ruled by the beautiful and immortal Queen Antinéa (Kanakis). Antinéa holds the men captive, intending to add them to her collection of mummified lovers. Morhange becomes captivated by Antinéa, while Saint-Avit plans their escape.
The film is a remake of several earlier film adaptations of Benoit's novel. While not as commercially successful or critically acclaimed as some of its predecessors, L'Atlantide (1992) presents a more modern and visually striking interpretation of the classic tale of adventure, romance, and the allure of a lost civilization. The film explores themes of obsession, power, and the dangers of the unknown. It remains a relatively obscure entry in the history of Atlantis-themed films.
