Damnation (album)

Damnation is the seventh studio album by Swedish progressive metal band Opeth, released in 2003 by Music for Nations. It marks a significant departure from Opeth's signature sound, which typically blended death metal growls with clean vocals and acoustic passages. Damnation is entirely devoid of harsh vocals and features a softer, more melodic and progressive rock-influenced sound.

The album's concept revolves around themes of loss, grief, and despair, explored through melancholic melodies and introspective lyrics. It was recorded simultaneously with its heavier companion album, Deliverance, but released several months later to highlight their contrasting styles.

Damnation was produced by Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree, who also contributed keyboard parts and backing vocals. His influence is readily apparent in the album's production and arrangement, further emphasizing its progressive rock sensibilities.

The album received critical acclaim for its atmospheric textures, emotional depth, and songwriting quality. While some long-time Opeth fans initially reacted negatively to the absence of death metal elements, Damnation is now widely regarded as a classic in the band's discography and a pivotal release in their evolution. Notable tracks include "Windowpane," "Hope Leaves," "Harvest," and "In My Time of Need."
