HNLMS Zwaardvisch (P322)

HNLMS Zwaardvisch (P322) was a Dutch Zwaardvisch-class submarine. Commissioned into the Royal Netherlands Navy, it served from 1972 to 1994. Built by Rotterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij (RDM) in Rotterdam, the Zwaardvisch class was heavily influenced by the United States Navy's Barbel-class submarines, particularly in its teardrop hull design for improved underwater performance.

The primary role of HNLMS Zwaardvisch (P322) was Cold War-era surveillance and anti-submarine warfare (ASW) in the North Atlantic and other strategic areas. The submarine conducted numerous patrols, participating in NATO exercises and gathering intelligence. Its advanced sonar systems were crucial for detecting and tracking Soviet submarines.

Following its decommissioning in 1994, HNLMS Zwaardvisch (P322) was eventually scrapped. A sister ship, HNLMS Tijgerhaai (P324), also served in the Royal Netherlands Navy. The Zwaardvisch class represented a significant advancement in Dutch submarine technology and contributed substantially to the Netherlands' naval capabilities during a critical period.
