Cornelius Desmond (American politician)

Cornelius "Neil" Desmond (born January 29, 1893, died August 31, 1974) was an American politician who served as a member of the New York State Senate, representing the 27th District (Orange and Rockland Counties) from 1957 to 1966.

Prior to his tenure in the Senate, Desmond served in the New York State Assembly, representing Orange County, from 1941 to 1956. A Democrat, his legislative career was marked by a focus on issues affecting the Hudson Valley region, including transportation, education, and environmental conservation.

Desmond was born in Newburgh, New York. He was a graduate of Fordham University and Fordham University School of Law. Before entering politics, he practiced law in Newburgh. He was a prominent figure in Orange County Democratic politics for several decades. Following his retirement from the Senate in 1966, he remained active in local affairs until his death in 1974. His contributions to New York State government are remembered through various local initiatives and historical accounts of the period.
