Visconti Castle (Lodi)

The Visconti Castle in Lodi, Lombardy, Italy, is a medieval castle built by the Visconti family, lords and later dukes of Milan. Construction began in 1335 under the patronage of Azzone Visconti, primarily as a defensive structure. The castle's strategic location along the Adda River made it a crucial fortification in the region.

Originally a substantial fortress with high walls and a large keep, the Visconti Castle served as both a military stronghold and a symbol of Visconti power. Over the centuries, the castle underwent modifications and expansions. The castle's layout is characterized by a square plan with towers at the corners, typical of medieval Italian castles.

While retaining its robust exterior, the interior of the castle was transformed over time to include more residential and administrative spaces. Control of the castle passed through various hands following the decline of the Visconti dynasty, including the Sforza family.

Today, the Visconti Castle in Lodi stands as a prominent landmark in the city, a testament to its medieval past. It has been restored and repurposed, often serving as a venue for cultural events and exhibitions.
