John Bowle (writer)

John Bowle (1725-1788) was an English cleric and antiquarian, best known for his annotated edition of Don Quixote, published in 1781. He was born in Shropshire and educated at Shrewsbury School and Oriel College, Oxford. He held various ecclesiastical positions throughout his life, including vicar of Idmiston, Wiltshire, and prebendary of Salisbury Cathedral.

Bowle's edition of Don Quixote aimed to elucidate the text for English readers by providing extensive notes on historical, literary, and topographical allusions. He drew upon his wide knowledge of Spanish history, literature, and customs to explain aspects of the novel that might be obscure to those unfamiliar with Spanish culture. His work was significant in promoting a deeper understanding and appreciation of Cervantes's masterpiece in England. Despite some criticism for its perceived pedantry, Bowle's edition was influential and paved the way for later scholarship on Don Quixote. He engaged in public literary debates with scholars like Joseph Baretti regarding the interpretation of Cervantes's work.
