Cliff Lee (potter)

Cliff Lee (1941-2023) was an American ceramic artist renowned for his meticulously crafted porcelain vessels, particularly his reduction-fired celadon and copper-red glazed pieces. Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Lee initially pursued a career in dentistry before dedicating himself fully to pottery in the 1970s.

Lee's work is characterized by its classical forms, subtle glazes, and exceptional thinness. He was deeply influenced by Song Dynasty ceramics, particularly the refined elegance of Longquan celadon and Jun ware. He spent years perfecting his glazing techniques, achieving a depth and complexity in his celadons that are highly sought after by collectors. His copper-red glazes were equally challenging to produce, requiring precise control of the kiln environment to achieve the desired vibrant color.

Lee's pottery often featured simple shapes, such as bowls, vases, and teapots, allowing the beauty of the glaze and form to take center stage. He aimed to create objects that were both functional and aesthetically pleasing, emphasizing the importance of balance and harmony in his designs.

His work has been exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the United States and internationally, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. He received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to the field of ceramics. Lee's dedication to his craft and his pursuit of perfection made him one of the most respected and influential ceramic artists of his generation.
