Bread (TV series)

Bread was a British television sitcom, written by Carla Lane, that aired on BBC1 from 1 May 1986 to 3 December 1991. The series focused on the Boswell family, a close-knit, working-class Catholic family in Liverpool, England, and their struggles to make ends meet amidst unemployment and the complex romantic entanglements of the family members. The matriarch, Nellie Boswell, played by Jean Boht, ruled the roost, fiercely protective of her family and constantly battling to keep them together, often through unconventional means. The series was known for its broad Liverpudlian humor, its portrayal of family dynamics, and its tackling of social issues such as poverty and unemployment. Notable cast members included Peter Howitt, Nick Conway, and Gilly Coman. The show proved immensely popular in the UK, attracting large audiences and sparking considerable discussion. Despite its success, it also received criticism for its depiction of working-class life and its perceived stereotypes.
