Artist (EP)

An Artist (EP), where "EP" stands for Extended Play, is a musical recording that contains more tracks than a single but is usually unqualified as an album or LP (Long Play). The typical EP length falls between these two formats, generally containing between four and six tracks, or lasting between 15 and 30 minutes in total running time.

The motivations behind releasing an EP are varied. Artists may use an EP to test new material, bridge the gap between albums, introduce a new band to a wider audience, or offer a collection of B-sides and rarities. For emerging artists, an EP can be a more affordable and manageable way to gain exposure than a full-length album. Major label artists may release EPs as promotional tools or for experimental projects.

The term "Extended Play" was originally coined in the vinyl record era to describe a 7-inch record that played at 45 RPM and could hold more music than a single due to a narrower groove. While the term originated with vinyl, the format has persisted through various media, including cassette tapes, CDs, and digital downloads.

The distinction between an EP and an album can sometimes be blurry and depends on varying industry standards and record label policies. Generally, if a recording exceeds a certain length (in terms of tracks or running time), it is considered an album rather than an EP.
