James Bell (Medal of Honor)
James Bell (born c. 1836, date of death unknown) was a United States Marine who received the Medal of Honor for his actions during the American Civil War.
Bell served as a Private in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery and service during the Battle of Mobile Bay, Alabama on August 5, 1864. Specifically, he is cited for his performance aboard the USS Brooklyn, where he bravely performed his duty despite heavy enemy fire. His conduct exemplified courage and devotion to duty.
His Medal of Honor citation reads: "On board the U.S.S. Brooklyn during action against rebel forts and with the ram Tennessee, Mobile Bay, 5 August 1864. Despite severe damage to his ship and the loss of men on either side of him, Bell maintained an outstanding performance throughout the battle, exhibiting marked courage and coolness and contributing materially to the success of the day."
