12th Armoured Regiment (Australia)

The 12th Armoured Regiment was an Australian Army armoured regiment. It was formed in 1949 from elements of the 2nd/12th Light Horse Regiment (Mechanised) and existed as a separate entity until 1956. The regiment's primary role was to provide armoured support to infantry formations. It was equipped with Matilda and Centurion tanks. Throughout its existence, the 12th Armoured Regiment was primarily a Citizen Military Forces (CMF) unit, meaning it was staffed by part-time soldiers who trained on weekends and during annual camps. The regiment was based in New South Wales and drew its personnel from that state. Following its disbandment in 1956, its role and personnel were largely absorbed back into the 2nd/12th Light Horse Regiment (Mechanised). The 12th Armoured Regiment did not see active service during its brief existence.
