Gangs (film)

Gangs of New York is a 2002 American historical crime drama film directed by Martin Scorsese and written by Jay Cocks, Steven Zaillian, and Kenneth Lonergan, from a story by Cocks. The film is set in the mid-19th century in the Five Points district of New York City and depicts a conflict between Irish immigrants and Nativist American gangs.

The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Cameron Diaz. It was inspired by Herbert Asbury's 1928 non-fiction book The Gangs of New York. The plot follows Amsterdam Vallon (DiCaprio), an Irish immigrant seeking revenge on William "Bill the Butcher" Cutting (Day-Lewis), the anti-immigrant gang leader who killed his father.

Gangs of New York explores themes of immigration, nativism, political corruption, and violence in 19th-century America. It was nominated for ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director (Scorsese), and Best Actor (Day-Lewis), but did not win any.
