Adiemus (albums)

Adiemus is a series of studio albums created by Welsh composer Karl Jenkins, beginning with Adiemus: Songs of Sanctuary in 1995. The albums are characterized by a blend of classical, new-age, and world music influences, featuring wordless vocals that function as instrumental textures rather than conveying specific lyrical meaning. The term "Adiemus" itself, coined by Jenkins, is a pseudo-Latin word intended to evoke a sense of ancient or universal language.

The music typically incorporates layered vocals, often performed by Miriam Stockley, along with orchestral arrangements and percussion. While drawing on various musical traditions, Adiemus aims to create a unique and accessible sound that transcends cultural boundaries.

Subsequent albums in the Adiemus series explore different themes and instrumental combinations, while maintaining the core elements of vocal harmonies, orchestral arrangements, and a globally-inspired musical aesthetic. They include, but are not limited to:

  • Adiemus II: Cantata Mundi (1997)
  • Adiemus III: Dances of Time (1998)
  • Adiemus IV: The Eternal Knot (2001)
  • Adiemus V: Vocalise (2003)
  • Adiemus Colores (2013)
