Weißhorn (South Tyrol)
The Weißhorn (German) or Corno Bianco (Italian) is a mountain in the Dolomites, located in South Tyrol, Italy. It is part of the Fiemme Mountains, which are a subgroup of the Dolomites.
The Weißhorn's summit reaches an elevation of approximately 2,316 meters (7,598 feet) above sea level. It is a popular destination for hiking and mountaineering, offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The area is known for its diverse flora and fauna.
The mountain can be accessed via several hiking trails, varying in difficulty and length. Some routes start from the nearby villages and towns, such as Nova Ponente/Deutschnofen and Obereggen. The Weißhorn is also accessible by chairlift during the summer season.
The Weißhorn is often associated with the nearby Schwarzhorn (Corno Nero), another prominent peak in the area. The two mountains are frequently visited together.
Geologically, the Weißhorn is composed primarily of dolomite rock, characteristic of the Dolomites. The region has a rich geological history, shaped by tectonic activity and glaciation.
The name "Weißhorn" translates to "White Horn" in German, referring to the mountain's often snow-covered appearance, particularly during the winter months. The Italian name, "Corno Bianco," also means "White Horn."
