Wernigerode (district)
Wernigerode was a district (German: Landkreis) in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. It was disbanded on July 1, 2007, as part of the Saxony-Anhalt district reform. The district was merged with Halberstadt and Quedlinburg districts to form the new Harz district.
The district was located in the northern part of the Harz mountains and was named after its capital, the town of Wernigerode. Its neighbors were (from the north clockwise) the districts of Bördekreis, Halberstadt, Quedlinburg, Nordhausen (in Thuringia), and Goslar (in Lower Saxony).
The Wernigerode district comprised several towns and municipalities, including Wernigerode, Ilsenburg, and Osterwieck. Its landscape was characterized by the Harz mountains, forests, and valleys, making it a popular tourist destination.
Before German reunification in 1990, the district was part of East Germany (GDR). The district's administrative structure was significantly altered following reunification to align with West German models. The disbandment of the district in 2007 was aimed at creating larger, more efficient administrative units within Saxony-Anhalt.
