Jim Short (politician)
James (Jim) Victor Short (born July 19, 1938) is an Australian politician who served as a Labor Party member of the Australian Senate for Victoria from 1985 to 1996.
Short was born in Melbourne, Victoria, and educated at Melbourne High School and the University of Melbourne, where he gained a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) and a Bachelor of Commerce. Before entering politics, he worked as an economist, including positions at the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) and the Victorian Trades Hall Council.
He was appointed to the Senate in 1985 following the resignation of Senator John Button. Short served on numerous Senate committees, including the Standing Committee on Finance and Government Operations, the Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology, and the Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade. He was particularly involved in matters relating to industry policy, trade, and industrial relations.
During his time in Parliament, Short was a strong advocate for policies aimed at strengthening Australian manufacturing and promoting job creation. He also played a role in debates surrounding economic reform and the restructuring of Australian industries.
Short lost his seat in the 1996 federal election. After leaving politics, he has remained involved in public policy discussions.
