Charles Holland (actor, born 1768)
Charles Holland (1768 – 1849) was a British actor, primarily known for his performances in comedy. He was born in London on March 12, 1768, the son of the elder actor Charles Holland (1733-1769) and the grandson of James Holland, also an actor. His career began at a young age, appearing at Drury Lane Theatre in 1779, eleven years after his father's death. He remained associated with Drury Lane for much of his career, playing a variety of roles, though he was generally considered to be a reliable rather than a star performer.
Holland's repertoire included roles in Shakespearean plays, such as Polonius in Hamlet, as well as characters in contemporary comedies. He was known for his solid and dependable performances, and he was a popular member of the Drury Lane company. While never achieving the fame of some of his contemporaries, he enjoyed a long and successful career on the London stage.
Holland retired from acting in 1835. He died on December 12, 1849, at his home in London. He was married to Miss Betterton; their daughter Harriet also had a stage career.
His association with a theatrical family across generations provided a connection to earlier eras of British theatre. His career spanned a significant period in theatrical history, witnessing changes in acting styles and dramatic tastes.
