Trochila
Trochila is a genus of fungi belonging to the family Dermateaceae, within the order Helotiales. These fungi are typically characterized as small, disc-shaped ascomycetes. They are generally saprobic, meaning they obtain nutrients from decaying organic matter, often found on dead or dying plant material, particularly leaves and stems.
Species within the Trochila genus can be challenging to identify without microscopic examination. Characteristics used for identification include the size and shape of the apothecia (fruiting bodies), the structure of the ascus (sac-like structure containing spores), and the characteristics of the ascospores (spores produced within the ascus).
Due to their small size and habitat, Trochila species are not typically considered economically important. They play a role in decomposition and nutrient cycling within ecosystems. Mycologists and plant pathologists are the primary audience interested in this genus for research and identification purposes.
