Rocket (Marvel Cinematic Universe)
Rocket, also known as 89P13, is a genetically engineered anthropomorphic raccoon and a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Initially introduced as a bounty hunter and mercenary, Rocket is a skilled marksman, pilot, and engineer, often creating and modifying weapons and vehicles. He possesses a cynical and sarcastic personality, often masking a deep-seated insecurity and vulnerability stemming from his traumatic origins and experimentation.
Rocket's history is largely defined by the painful procedures and modifications he endured at the hands of scientists. These experiments endowed him with enhanced intelligence and physical abilities, but also left him with emotional scars. He formed a close bond with Groot, a sentient tree-like being, and together they traveled the galaxy engaging in various mercenary activities.
Rocket's involvement with the Guardians of the Galaxy began when he and Groot attempted to collect the bounty on Peter Quill (Star-Lord). Despite their initial differences, they joined forces with Quill, Gamora, and Drax to prevent Ronan the Accuser from using the Power Stone to destroy Xandar.
Following the defeat of Ronan, Rocket continued to operate as a member of the Guardians, participating in numerous battles and adventures, including confronting Ego, Peter Quill's celestial father, and Thanos during the Infinity War. He was one of the few survivors of the Decimation caused by Thanos's snap and played a critical role in the subsequent effort to undo it, leading to his reunion with Groot.
Rocket's character arc throughout the MCU has focused on his emotional growth and acceptance of himself and his place within the Guardians. He develops meaningful relationships with his teammates, learning to trust and rely on them. He ultimately confronts his past traumas and begins to heal, demonstrating a capacity for leadership and self-sacrifice. He eventually becomes the de facto leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy.
