Ron Turner (American football)

Ron Turner (born March 19, 1954) is an American football coach. He has served in various coaching positions at both the collegiate and professional levels, most notably as a head coach in the National Football League (NFL) and in college football.

Turner's coaching career began as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, Pacific. He subsequently held assistant coaching positions at Arizona, USC, and Stanford, primarily working with quarterbacks and wide receivers.

He entered the NFL as the wide receivers coach for the Los Angeles Rams in 1992. From there, he held offensive coordinator positions with the Chicago Bears (1993-1996) and Indianapolis Colts (1997).

Turner's first head coaching job came with the University of Illinois Fighting Illini, a position he held from 1997 to 2004. His tenure at Illinois was marked by inconsistent results, with the high point being a Big Ten Championship and Sugar Bowl appearance in 2001.

He returned to the Chicago Bears as their head coach in 2005, a position he held until being fired in 2009. During his time with the Bears, the team reached Super Bowl XLI in 2007, losing to the Indianapolis Colts.

Following his departure from the Bears, Turner served as an offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2010-2011). He later returned to college coaching as an offensive coordinator at Florida International University and head coach at Indiana State University.
