Art Acord
Art Acord (April 17, 1890 – January 4, 1931) was an American actor and rodeo champion. Born in Stillwater, Oklahoma Territory, Acord was a prominent silent film cowboy star, known for his athleticism and authentic western skills. He began his career as a rodeo performer, winning the world championship in steer wrestling in 1912. This led to his entry into Hollywood, where he initially worked as a stuntman and bit player.
Acord quickly transitioned to leading roles, starring in numerous westerns throughout the 1920s. His films often featured thrilling action sequences and showcased his genuine riding and roping abilities. He was a popular figure with audiences, embodying the rugged and heroic image of the cowboy.
With the advent of sound films, Acord's career declined. His thick Oklahoma accent proved problematic for the new medium. He struggled to find work and faced personal difficulties, including alcoholism. He died by suicide in 1931.
Despite his relatively short and ultimately tragic career, Art Acord is remembered as a significant figure in the history of the western film genre and a genuine cowboy who brought authenticity to the screen. He is a member of the Rodeo Hall of Fame and the Western Performers Hall of Fame.
