Alboka
The alboka is a Basque single-reed wind instrument of ancient origin. It is traditionally made from animal horn, specifically two cow horns joined together to form a double-pipe chanter, and a larger horn acting as a bell. The chanter pipes are parallel and typically of unequal length, each with several finger holes. The player employs circular breathing techniques to maintain a continuous drone while playing melodies. The alboka is primarily associated with the Basque Country, particularly in Biscay and Gipuzkoa, but related instruments exist in other regions of Europe and North Africa. It is considered a symbol of Basque folk music and culture, although its use has declined in recent times. Efforts are being made to preserve and promote the instrument and its traditional playing techniques.
