Om (band)
Om is an American doom metal band from San Francisco, California, formed in 2003. The band is primarily composed of Al Cisneros (bass and vocals) and Emil Amos (drums). Former members include Chris Hakius (drums; 2003–2008) and Robert A.A. Lowe (guitar, vocals; 2008–2012), who was credited as "A".
Om evolved from the ashes of the influential stoner metal band Sleep, following Sleep's dissolution due to conflicts with their record label in the late 1990s. Cisneros, along with former Sleep drummer Chris Hakius, formed Om to explore a more minimalist and meditative sonic landscape.
Musically, Om's style is characterized by its slow tempos, heavily distorted bass lines, chanted vocals, and strong Eastern philosophical and religious themes. Their music incorporates elements of drone, doom metal, and psychedelia, creating a hypnotic and immersive listening experience. Lyrical content often draws from sacred texts, particularly those of Hinduism and Buddhism, exploring concepts of consciousness, spirituality, and transcendence.
Om's discography includes several studio albums, EPs, and live recordings. Notable albums include Variations on a Theme (2005), Conference of the Birds (2006), Pilgrimage (2007), God Is Good (2009), and Advaitic Songs (2012). Their work has been critically acclaimed for its unique blend of heavy music and spiritual exploration, establishing Om as a significant force in the contemporary doom metal scene.
