Alçıtepe

Alçıtepe is a village located in the Eceabat district of Çanakkale Province, Turkey. It is situated on the Gallipoli Peninsula, and is historically significant due to its proximity to key battlefields of the Gallipoli Campaign during World War I.

The name "Alçıtepe" translates to "Gypsum Hill" in Turkish.

During the Gallipoli Campaign, Alçıtepe (also referred to as Krithia by Allied forces) was a primary objective for the Allied troops. Capturing Alçıtepe would have provided the Allies with control of the high ground, offering strategic advantages over the Ottoman forces defending the peninsula. Several major battles were fought in the area surrounding Alçıtepe, resulting in heavy casualties on both sides. These included the First, Second and Third Battles of Krithia. Despite repeated attempts, the Allied forces were ultimately unable to capture Alçıtepe.

Today, Alçıtepe is a relatively small village. The area is visited by many tourists each year who come to see the war memorials and cemeteries associated with the Gallipoli Campaign. The landscape is still marked by the remnants of trenches and other defensive works, serving as a reminder of the intense fighting that took place there.
